Chaetopteridae Audouin & Milne Edwards, 1833
Two species of Chaetopteridae were collected from Falkland Islands, one belongs to genus Phyllochaetopterus Grube, 1863 and the other to Spiochaetopterus M Sars, 1856. Both species are likely new to science, suggesting that diversity of this group is greater than two known species reported from the wider region so far Chaetopterus variopedatus (Renier, 1804); Spiochaetopterus patagonicus Kinberg, 1866, S. costarum Hartman-Schroder, 1991 and Phyllochaetopterus monroi Hartman, 1967). Further, the Chaetopterus variopedatus was originally described from the Mediterranean Sea and it is possible that Southern Ocean specimens belong to other as yet undescribed species. The morphological description of chaetopterids is structured in 3 different body regions following Bhaud (1998): anterior (region A), mid-body (region B) and posterior (region C) (e.g. A4 = chaetiger 4 in region A, B1= chaetiger 1 in region B).
