Sabellidae
Sabellidae Laterille, 1825
Together with Terebellidae, Sabellidae were the most species rich (and taxonomically challenging!) family collected from Falkland Islands (with S >20). Some genera such as Jasmineira, Euchone and Amphicorina were particularly species rich. Existing descriptions of Sabellidae from the geographical region of interest here are often brief/incomplete and this group would greatly benefit from the revision and re-description of holotypes (where possible) as many characters, particularly those of the branchial crown, have not been discussed by earlier taxonomist. As a result many Sabellidae species were misidentified in the past as some recent provisional work demonstrated, particularly for genus Perkinsiana and related genera (see Knight-Jones, 1983, Giangrande and Gambi, 1997 and Tovar-Hernández et al., 2012 for details). Here we attempt to give a complete description of species collected from Falkland Islands as possible, given constrains of completeness of material and taxonomic expertise. Inevitably, characters derived from the branchial crown were not always possible to determine when the crown was missing. Further, this section of the guide would greatly benefit from the input by sabellid specialists as assignment to some genera is uncertain (denoted by “?”) and interpretation of some characters related to branchial crown can be problematic. Taxonomic key to Sabellidae genera provided by Tovar-Hernández (2010) was used to establish generic identifications. Useful introduction to taxonomic characters of Sabellidae (and Fabriciidae) was provided by Giangrande et al. (2015).
