Genus Phyllodoce Lamarck, 1818
At least six species, currently belonging to genus Phyllodoce have been described from the region (see tables below), many of them with confused taxonomic history and imperfect descriptions.
Examination of Phyllodoce species collected from Falkland Islands suggests the presence of at least 4 forms with affinities to P. patagonica based on form of the proboscis with dorsomedian row of papillae and truncated, subrectangular dorsal cirri in mid-body segments and are here treated as P. patagonica complex until molecular evidence becomes available. Additionally, morphospecies Phyllodoce sp. 1. with similar form of proboscis has also been recorded, but it lacks pigmentation, and dorsal cirri of mid body segments are rhomboid rather than truncated (see comparative image of Phyllodoce species).
Notes on Phyllodoce species known from the region as reported in literature.

Notes |
P. patagonica |
The original description by Kinberg (1866) is incredibly brief, not accompanied by drawings and therefore of very little value, with type material in bad condition (Bergström, 1914). Reports of P. madeirensis (i.e. Ehlers, 1897, 1913) from the region are likely to belong to P. patagonica. Additional taxonomic information was provided by Bergström (1914). |
P. pseudopatagonica |
Augener (1922) mainly distinguished this species (type locality: Juan Fernandez) form P. patagonica based on distributional differences, with P. pseudopatagonica confined to warmer waters, while P. patagonica to colder water of Magellanic region. Based on images of Augener (1922) the dorsal cirri are rather elongated, tapering, not subrectangular. |
P. longipes |
P. longipes was also inadequately described by Kinberg (1866) and description of Phyllodoce cf. longipes was provided by Pleijel (1993), although based on specimens from Norther Europe. Pleijel (1993) reported oval dorsal cirri, while for example image of Day (1963) used by Hartman (1966) shows broadly lanceolate form with short, slender tips. It is clear P. longipes has been misidentified in the past. |
P. adarensis |
Detailed description with drawings provided by Benham (1927); reported by Hartman (1966) |
P. truncata |
Subrectangular dorsal cirri of P. truncata described from Peru and Chile by Hartmann-Schröder (1965) are of similar form to P. patagonica (based on information in Hartman, 1966). Hartmann-Schröder (1965) did not provide description of the proboscis, nor did she provide comparison with P. patagonica. |
