Neanthes Kinberg, 1865
Neanthes Kinberg, 1865
Neanthes sp. 1
Vouchers. TOROA: station T9FB and INFLEXIBLE: station 4MFA.
Diagnosis. Vouchers posteriorly incomplete; small sized – larger voucher 5mm, width up to 0.5mm including parapodia for 53 chaetigers. Eyes absent. Proboscis partially everted; paragnaths present (their distribution not determined), dark jaws present. For form of parapodia and chaetae see attached plates. Pygidium uknown.
Remarks. Both voucher specimens are very small and we cannot exclude that they are juveniles. The patterns of paragnaths was not determined as proboscis was only partially extended. Type specimen of Neanthes typhla (Monro, 1930) described from South Georgia is present in NHM collection and was checked. The following differences were noted, but given that Monro’s specimen was much larger, it is not clear if observed difference can be contributed to size differences:
- the posterior most dorsal cirrus is longer than the others in Falklands Is. specimen, but of similar size or only slightly longer in N. typhla
- lobes of parapodia are protruding into sharp tips in Falkland Is. specimens, but are more oblique/rounded in N. typhla
At present we assign Falkland Islands specimens to morphospecies Neanthes sp. 1.
