Pholoe Johnston, 1839
Pholoe sp. 1
Voucher. VINSON WEST 1MFA.
Diagnosis. Voucher an incomplete specimen, split into two fragments, the anterior fragment 0.8 mm long and 0.4mm (excluding parapodia) for 9 segments. Body flattened dorsoventrally; elytra mostly missing.
Few elytra present; oval to oblong, translucent; postero-lateral margin with few, sparse elongated, slender papillae; surface of the elytra rugose - composed of irregular cells, with very few, sparse, tiny microtubercules.
Prostomium and tentacular segment fused; prostomium oval, bilobed; eyes absent. Large, inverted-pear shaped ceratophore of median antenna in deep anterior notch, with slender smooth style.
Lateral antennae not observed. Tentaculophores lateral to prostomium, dorsal cirri slightly longer than ventral cirri; both cirri similar to median antenna. Palps slender. Digitiform facial tubercle emerging medial to bases of tentaculophores.
Second segment with first pair of bulbous elytrophores, biramous parapodia, and long, basally inserted ventral cirri. Parapodia distinctly bi-ramous, notopodia smaller than neuropodia, both conical. Ventral cirri short, tapered, medially inserted.
Notochaetae numerous, typical for the genus: slender, finely spinose, arranged in two groups with dorsal group short, strongly bent, tapering abruptly to short capillary tips; others longer, straight to slightly curved, tapering to capillary tips. Neurochaetae relatively few, compound, forming fan-shaped group; shafts with few spinose rows near distal tip; blades of medium length, with unidentate slightly curved tips, appearing smooth to slightly spinous under light microscopy; upper neurochaetae with blades slightly longer than lower ones.
