Augeneria tentaculata Monro, 1930
Voucher specimen. VINSON WEST: station 1MFB.
Diagnosis. Voucher specimen 9mm with 29 chaetigers. Body thick and robust. Prostomium a long cone with rounded tip. Nuchal papillae not observed (three median papillae often seen situated on the distal edge of the prostomium and peristomium).
Mandibles flat, white, X-shaped. Max I with large distal extension; Max II with three low teeth; Max III concave inner surface; Max IV larger than III, irregularly rectangular, white in centre; Max V missing.
Hooded hooks compound in anterior chaetigers 1–13 becoming simple thereafter.
Remarks. Orensanz (1990) remarks that the genus needs to be revised and does not provide a key to species in the Southern Ocean. This species appears to be distinct based on the shape of the maxillae, distribution of the hooded hooks and the transition from compound to simple chaetae. Further study of the various species is required to determine taxonomic boundaries. Nominally, A. tenaculata has been recorded from Antarctic seas, the slope off South America at depths of 80–2350 m.
