Onuphis pseudoiridescens Averincev, 1972
Voucher specimen. SEALION: stations 1MFC and 8MFA; TOROA: station T4FA.
Diagnosis. Fragmented specimen from 8 MFA 40 mm with 100 chaetigers. First two to three chaetigers slightly enlarged but not projecting forward. Ceratophores of the antennae are long with at least 10 rings. Peristomium complete, not incised mid-dorsally. Peristomial cirri long, as long as peristomium and inserted distally.
Branchiae start on chaetiger 1, sometimes on chaetiger 4, simple, strap-like.
Anterior pseudo-compound hooks tridentate with truncated hoods; palmate chaetae flat; subacicular hooks bidentate, starting on chaetigers 12–15.
Remarks. The body of this species has an iridescent sheen and in fresh material there is a pigment spot at the base of the anterior chaetigers. Orensanz (1990) notes that the ventral cirri of this species are cirriform over the anterior 4 to 5 chaetigers. The species was one of the commonest in the Sealion samples and it appears to be a widespread species in the Magellanic region occurring at depths of 21–861 m.
