Ninoe falklandica Monro 1936

Ninoe falklandica Monro 1936

Voucher specimens: SEALION: station 1MFC, 5MFA and 8MFA.

Diagnosis. Specimen from 1MFC fragmented, 38mm with 117 chaetigers. Body large. Prostomium short, nearly as wide as long, pointed. Branchiae present, beginning around chaetiger 3 and extending to chaetiger 28-35, branchial filaments becoming well developed, with 4-6 filaments on chaetigers in the middle of this range.

Mandibles with thin, long posterior lobes. Max II with 6 teeth, Max III with one tooth, Max IV finely serrated.

Chaetae-simple hooks start on chaetiger 1 with long thin finely dentate tips, becoming more robust on distal chaetigers; with one main fang and 6-7 smaller teeth above.

Remarks. N. falklandica  can be distinguished from N. leptognatha Ehlers 1900, by the distribution of simple hooded hooks which start from chaetiger 1 in the former and much further back – chaetiger 25 or more – in the latter. N. falklandica  has been recorded from a range of sites around southern South America in depths of 140–659 m.
