Trichobranchidae Malmgren, 1866

Recent taxonomic work revealed many new species of Trichobranchidae (particularly in genus Terebellides Sars, 1835), from worldwide areas (e.g. Hutchings and Peart, 2000; Gagaev, 2009; Parapar et al., 2011; Parapar et al. 2015), including South America and South Atlantic (Bremec and Elias, 1999; Schüller and Hutchings, 2012). Revisionary works clarified the status of Terebellides stroemii (Parapar and Hutchings, 2015) as well as some commonly reported species from the Southern Ocean (Parapar and Moreira, 2008). New characters were identified or gained importance (Hutchings and Peart, 2000). There is therefore up to date taxonomic information available, although new species are likely to be discovered. Falkland Island specimens of Trichobranchidae were sadly often damaged and in bad condition, preventing unambiguous identifications/conclusions. The diversity of this group in Falkland Islands is likely much higher than species reported here, particularly in small-sized species from 1000m depths. The species recorded are summarized in table below.

Overview of Trichobranchidae genera/species collected from Falkland Islands in this study

one large branchia with 4 lobes with transverse lamellae; lobes completely free from each other

geniculate acicular hooks with shafts sharply bent and acute tips (=different to those in subsequent thoracic segments)

Terebellides sp. 2

not expanded

one large branchia with anterior pair of lobes large, fused; posterior pair smaller, fusion unknown

geniculate acicular hooks with shafts sharply bent and acute tips (=different to those in subsequent thoracic segments)

lappets on chaetigers 1-5; abdomen narrow, tapering

Terebellides sp. 3

not expanded

one large branchia with anterior pair of lobes large, posterior pair small; all lobes mostly free from each other

geniculate acicular hooks with shafts sharply bent and acute tips (=different to those in subsequent thoracic segments)
