Brada Stimpson, 1854
Brada sp. 1
Voucher specimens. SEA LION: station 35MFB, 18MFA and 29MFB.
Diagnosis. Medium to large sized species. The largest voucher complete specimen with 35 chaetigers , 45mm long and 7mm wide at widest point. Body fusiform, tapering posteriorly. Body greyish, incrusted with particles particularly dorsally giving it rusty appearance. Body densely and irregularly covered with small papillae; papillae incrusted on dorsum (not visible), on ventrum papillae more exposed, appearing short and cirriform. First chaetiger with prolonged capillary chaetae, about 12 chaetae on each side. In subsequent segments notochaetae few, about 2 per fascicle, long, thin capillaries. Neurochaetae acicular, straight, amber-coloured, about 5 per fascicle. Large rounded nephridial papillae present ventrally to neuropodia of chaetiger 5.
Remarks. Several species of Brada have been recorded from the region with Brada mamillata Grube, 1877 described from Kerguelen Is. and later reported by Hartman (1953) from Falkland Islands in 7-8m water depth. Most species were poorly described or assumed to belong to species with type locality in Northern Europe. Revision of species of Brada from the region is needed. Currently we ascribe the specimens from Falkland Islands to morphospecies Brada sp. 1.
