Boguea sp. 1
Bogueinae Hartman & Fauchald, 1971
Boguea Hartman, 1945
Boguea sp. 1
Vouchers. VINSON WEST: station 3MFB and 4MFB.
Diagnosis. Small and slender species; voucher incomplete; a single anterior fragment with 13 chaetigers, 7mm long and 0.25mm wide; colour is whitish to pale yellow.
Prostomium without cephalic plaque, but with high cephalic keel; prostomium narrow, slightly elongated, “hood” shaped; together with peristomium separated from the first chaetiger by a segmental furrow, without dorsal crest. Chaetigers 1 - 8, long and narrow (about 2-3 times longer than wide); chaetigers 9 – 13 (end of fragments), extremely long (up to 8 times longer than wide). Ventral glandular shields or segmental collars not observed.
Chaetigers 1-4 with notochaetae only; notochaetae few, narrowly limbate shorter and longer capillaries. Uncini from chaetiger 5, where few (about 5) arranged in a single row, in subsequent chaetigers increasing in number and become arranged in irregular to double rows; from chaetiger 8, more distinctly arranged in 2 semicircular rows on slightly raised fleshy pads, until the end of fragment (=chaetiger 13). The uncini have a large main fang surmounted by about 4 vertical rows of small teeth in frontal view, as 3 smaller teeth above the main fang in lateral view ; breast of uncini with a stout subrostral spine above basal prow; basal prow thick.
Posterior part and pygidium not observed. Tube: specimen from station 4MFB with small remnant of the tube; appear loose, composed of coarse black particles, adorned with few tests of foraminifera.
Remarks. This is a rather interesting species which belongs to the rather rare, species-poor subfamily Bogueinae Hartman & Fauchald, 1971, although characters derived from posterior part of the body cannot be confirmed. It resembles Rhodine in lacking cephalic plaque and having uncini arranged in double and single rows, with their start from chaetiger 5 (also 4 in Bogueinae). However Bogueinae lack segmental collars and vary in other characters (see Wolf, 1983 for details). Of the two genera of Bogueinae, Falkland Islands specimens agree with genus Boguea in having uncini from chaetiger 5 rather than 4 as in Boguella. Each genus contains only one species and both were re-described by Wolf (1983). Boguea enigmatica has been described from the southern part of the USA Atlantic coast from shallow waters (2 – 101m). Unfortunately, Falkland Islands specimens are very short, incomplete and not all characters can be compared. They likely represent a new species as only smooth, limbate notochaetae were observed, uncini from anterior part of the body are of different form (see comparative image) and dimensions of body segments differ from B. enigmatica (segments appear of similar length in drawing provided by Wolf, 1983). Complete specimens will be necessary to fully diagnose this species and provide full comparison with B. enigmatica.
