Terebellidae Johnston, 1846

The classification followed here is reflecting current status in WoRMS database (see link: http://marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=982), which can be summarized as follow: only subfamilies Terebellinae, Thelepodinae, and Polycirrinae are recognised with Amphitritinae now disused in favour of Terebellinae, Thelepinae emended to Thelepodinae and Artacaminae is not currently used, as Artacama is included in Terebellinae. We do not follow recent re-organisation as proposed by Nogueira, Fitzhugh & Hutchings (2013).

Terebellidae have confused taxonomic history with the on-going debate (Nogueira, Fitzhugh & Hutchings, 2013). This is another group from the region in urgent need of revision and update of taxonomic literature. The species overview is here organised by subfamily. Briefly the subfamilies as recognised here can be identified as follows (modified from Jirkov and Leontovich, 2013; see also other references below for terminology, characters and alternative classifications):

Terebellinae: upper lip usually small; branchiae present or absent, if present of various shapes, usually branched; thoracic uncini arranged in double rows in posterior thorax.

Thelepodinae: upper lip usually small; branchiae always present, as simple filaments and never branched; thoracic uncini arranged in single row.

Polycirrinae: upper lip elongated; branchiae absent; thoracic uncini present or absent, if present always arranged in a single row.
